Those who are top basketball players on the court don’t always translate to top basketball executives when their careers end. Larry Bird has had some success in his post playing career; having worked for a top basketball franchise like the Indiana Pacers after playing for a top basketball franchise like the Celtics for a solid number of years. During most of his time as a player Bird was one of the most universally recognized top basketball players in the world. If you are one of the top basketball players within the NBA during a certain era or decade there is a high probability that you will end up with a bunch of endorsement deals that will only your amount of exposure to the public.
Other NBA executives merely played a specific role on a team instead of being one of the top basketball players akin to what Bird was. John Paxson for example who has been in the front office for the Bulls for nearly a decade was indeed a role player and a three point specialist on the teams that Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen commanded to the first three peat for the Chicago Bulls during the 1990’s. Paxson still played a crucial role in one of the greatest top basketball dynasties in recent years. People don’t tend to remember that Paxson started out his basketball career with the San Antonio Spurs during a time when the Spurs were not exactly one of the top basketball franchises out there.
Top basketball franchises do like to offer their formerly great and now retired players a spot in the front of the organization often times. It is a good public relations move for these top basketball franchises. The fans of these top basketball franchises often want to make sure the people they use to cheer are properly taken care of in their post top basketball playing careers. They are also curious as to what those former players are up to. You have to wonder whether a now top basketball franchise like the Spurs will offer David Robinson a job to take a more active role in their top basketball franchise front office.
