Sonny Liston vs Rocky Marciano?
15 rounds, at their best. Who wins?
I always felt it was a great shame that Rocky didn’t stick around just a couple of more years and give Sonny a chance to get his hands on him. No disrespect to anyone, Marciano especially, but I think if that had happened, all the hype and adulation around this man today would have been in lot smaller proportions.
Rocky’s best chance would be to out-last Sonny Liston. It’s not likely to happen. People speak of Rocky’s legendary chin but his balance wasn’t very good at all and Liston is FAR more powerful than the two who floored Marciano.
Rocky would not have been able to wait for Sonny because Liston only had 9 fights when Rocky had his last and 12 when Rocky officially retired. He would have had to wait for Liston another 3 years. Then again, with boxing littered with the politics of the times, it’s likely that Rocky’s management would have taken Sonny as early as possible.
At prime, Liston would be too strong for Rocky. Rocky would have to try to survive until the later rounds where he would have his best chance. This is very possible as Rocky wasn’t as easy to hit as many seem to think.
Add to this, the fact that Liston wasn’t very fast. He could KO Rocky early. However, Rocky could avoid enough of Liston’s punches to KO him later.
The size and difference in power would have to favor Liston. It’s more likely that he would catch Rocky early and keep him hurt, stopping him in round 6.
